Timothy Mears found Guilty of Attempted Murder of William Yu in Los Angeles Chinatown in 2022

@waygoman on Instagram announced that, last Friday the 3rd, a jury found Timothy Mears guilty of attempted murder for his knifing of William Yu in LA C-town in March last year. You may remember the incident made the news and went viral across Instagram.

The family thanked bystander Mr. Garcia, who was the only witness who stepped forward to intervene and assist Yu, during the incident, and then later, testifying at the trial.

In the videos, numerous people witnessed the attack, but nobody intervened during the incident. Only one person, Mr. Garcia, stepped in to assist, and pointed out who was the attacker.

They also thanked DA Wammack for pursuing a conviction for attempted murder.

The IG post:

On the original viral posts about the incident, the usual post commenters said “liberal” DA Gascon would release the attacker to the streets. The LA County inmate database records showed that Mears did not make bail, and stayed in jail. The records indicate “NO BAIL”. Commenters and editorials that talk about “violent people being released” are a deceptive attempt to derail reformist prosecutors.

Violent suspects must be held in custody, or granted a very high bail amount. (This happened with the Roques hate crime case.)

One can only wonder if this attack could have been prevented if the state provided guaranteed housing and freely available mental health care.

Now, for as long as Mears’ is away in prison, we’re going to be paying for his incarceration at a price that would be many multiples more expensive than a state guaranteed apartment, and adequate mental health care.

After serving his time, Mears may be released in a condition no better than he is going in, if he doesn’t find ways to reform himself.

For as long as William Yu and the people close to him are alive, they will be dealing with the trauma of the stabbing. The “cost” of this is incalculable.

Comparing Stabbings Around the World

According to stats at Stabbing Deaths by Country, the US has twice to seven times more stabbing deaths than in Europe. However, in the US, we have roughly four shooting deaths for each stabbing death, while in Europe, there are two stabbing deaths for every shooting death. (These are rough estimates.)

Here’s what that looks like:

USA: 🔫🔫🔫🔫🗡️🔫🔫🔫🔫🗡️🔫🔫🔫🔫🗡️🔫🔫🔫🔫🗡️🔫🔫🔫🔫🗡️🔫🔫🔫🔫🗡️

Europe: 🔫🗡️🗡️

Europe largely has universal housing and healthcare.
