The discussion around such horrific acts of violence must be placed in the context of widespread economic strife which encourages desperate acts. There can never be an excuse for the killing of innocent civilians, but we cannot move society forward without being cognizant of the historic and systemic roots of violence in the U.S. Also, while this case may not be identified as a “hate crime” per se, we must ask why yet another Asian business was targeted?
And, while we support GoFundMe efforts for victims, we must continue the work to change a racist healthcare system that forces so many to rely upon this mode of fundraising to finance the healthcare that all should have access to.
