Korean Daily Coverage of February 16 Solidarity Event to Honor Victims of Anti-Asian Violence
“증오범죄라는 바이러스와 싸우고 이웃끼리 따뜻한 웃음을 되찾읍시다!”
“Let’s fight the virus of hate crime and bring back warm smiles among our neighbors!”
지난 16일 오후 6시 LA한인타운 6가와 사우스 켄모어 애비뉴에는 한인 등 50여 명이 모여 아시아계 증오범죄를 규탄하고 희생자를 추모하는 집회를 가졌다. 이날 집회는 1년여 전 아시아계 증오범죄에 맞서기 위해 자발적으로 구성된 네이버후드세이프티컴페이온(NSC)이 주최했다.
(At 6 pm on the 16th, about 50 Koreans, including Koreans, gathered at 6th Street and South Kenmore Avenue in Los Angeles to condemn hate crimes of Asian descent and commemorate the victims. 집회는 아시아계를 주축으로 흑인·백인·라틴계 등 여러 인종이 참여했다. 주최 측은 코로나19 팬데믹 기간 증오범죄로 희생된 20여 명의 사진을 들고 추모의 시간도 가졌다. 희생자 명단에는 지난 13일 뉴욕 미행강도로 숨진 크리스티나 유나 이씨, 지난 1월 한 노숙자가 뉴욕 타임스퀘어 지하철 선로로 밀어 사망한 중국계 여성 미셸 고(40), 지난해 뉴욕 맨해튼에서 무차별 폭행으로 사망한 중국계 남성 야오판마 등이 포함됐다.
(The rally was attended by various races, including blacks, whites, and Latins, mainly of Asian descent. The organizers also held a time of remembrance with photos of about 20 victims of hate crimes during the COVID-19 pandemic. On the list of victims are Christina Yuna Lee, who died in a robbery in New York on the 13th, Michelle Go, 40, a Chinese woman who was killed by a homeless person pushing her onto a subway track in Times Square in New York in January, and Yao Pan Ma, a Chinese man who died in an indiscriminate assault in Manhattan, New York last year.)
주최 측은 연방 정부와 의회가 인종차별과 증오범죄에 강력히 대응해야 한다고 촉구했다.
(Organizers urged the federal government and Congress to take strong action against racism and hate crimes.)
이번 집회를 준비한 래지는 “전국에서 아시아계 증오범죄가 1년 사이 339%(LA 173%)나 늘었다. 연방 의회는 이런 일을 방관하지 말고 적극적으로 나서야 한다. 증오범죄 피해자를 위한 상담과 치료도 꼭 제공해야 한다”고 말했다.

한인 길 이씨는 “페퍼 스프레이와 호루라기를 들고 다녀야 안심이 되는 시기를 살고 있다”며 “증오범죄는 (사람 마음을 좀먹는) 바이러스다. 우리는 이 바이러스와 싸워야 하고 서로에게 웃음짓던 열린 마음을 되찾아야 한다”고 강조했다.
(“We are living in a time when it is safe to carry pepper spray and a whistle,” said Gil Lee, a Korean. We have to fight this virus and get back the open mind we used to laugh at each other.”)
