In the wake of the 2021 Atlanta murders of massage spa workers and people adjacent, articles raised the history of the Page Act, which was not well known, even among activists. Most know the Chinese Exclusion act of 1882 (link goes to a documentary film).
The Page Act (1875), a law that effectively prohibited Chinese women from immigrating, becoming the first restrictive immigration law of many.
Read Polygamy, Prostitution, and the Federalization of Immigration Law to get a feel for what people thought about Chinese people in the 1870s. For me, the paper was like reading science fiction, where the social rules are mostly different than today’s, but many aspects are the same, and the story sometimes feels contemporary.
